Engineering Architectural Romanticism

This section explores Sophie's interest in the relationship between structure and ornament. Rather than treating architecture and decoration as opposing forces, these projects investigate how the two can work together to create jewelry that feels both emotionally expressive and structurally intentional. Open frameworks, engineered negative space, layered construction, and asymmetrical balance appear throughout the work, creating pieces that balance visual lightness with significant technical complexity.

Finding Inspiration

My design inspiration is drawn from a wide range of visual disciplines, including architecture, decorative arts, historical jewelry, and natural forms. I am particularly interested in how ornament communicates cultural values and how design elements evolve across time. Architectural details, Art Nouveau linework, and Art Deco geometry frequently inform my work, providing a foundation for creating pieces that feel both historically informed and contemporary.

    Quick Sketches

    Many projects begin with fast, informal sketches that explore proportion, silhouette, and overall concept before any technical development begins. At this stage the goal is not precision, but discovery—capturing an idea quickly enough to evaluate its potential and identify promising directions for further refinement.

    Digital Iterations

    Once a concept shows promise, it moves into a digital environment where proportions, stone layouts, structural requirements, and manufacturing constraints can be explored in greater detail. Multiple iterations are developed to test visual balance, wearability, and construction before a final direction is selected.

    Simple Prototyping

    Low-fidelity prototypes provide an opportunity to evaluate scale, finger coverage, and visual impact before significant time is invested in engineering and production. Even simple paper models can reveal issues of proportion and presence that are difficult to assess accurately on a screen alone.
